Google news appears to have sections of it missing. Perhaps they are censoring the news? Or is it a “technical” glitch?

It looks like Microsoft is jumping in on the bandwagon for ultimate control of people who use Windows :

David Frost of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, put it perfectly when he said : “Our research into employees shows that where individuals feel they are under excessive monitoring or surveillance they tend to have a negative attitude towards their employer and are therefore less likely to be motivated and committed. Employers who consider introducing this need to think twice.”

I agree with that!

Here is an update on this topic:

I have read the article from the irish time and added my own comments. It is 7 minutes and 55 seconds. It is available to download here :

This is my own first recording, so bear with me :-)

It is kept off site, because of bandwidth reasons and also the fact that the server is in the USA (WA state) means it will be available regardless of our site status.

My own comments on this : is that this should not be rushed through, there is no detailed document outlining exactly what should be kept. This should be debated at the very least by Irish ISP\’s. No surprise if they ask the goverment to pay for retaining all that data.

Roughly speaking about 66% of Irish people have internet access. Now that is around 3.3 million people\’s data whom the ISP\’s will have to store. The will probably share that info with the goverment.

On top of all that, it there are three things nobody has considered :
(1) Extra bandwith requirments
(2) Data renention and storage
(3) The security and integrity of the data

My own estimate of the extra storage required is 50Gb per person * 3.3 million = 165 000 000 Gb
Or if you prefer, this is 165 Petabytes of data….where are they gonna hold it all? Granted we dont have one ISP so it wont be all in once place, but take Eircom who claim to have 500,000 customers…thats still alot of data,,

With hope this will encourage people to use encryption and other techniques for privacy reasons.

Records of e-mails and internet chat messages sent and received by Irish residents - and the times they log on and off the internet - will have to be stored for three years. The scheme will be implemented within a month.

The Irish Times has learned the Department of Justice intends to effect a controversial EU data retention directive affecting e-mail and web usage \”within a month\”, according to a department spokeswoman.

Due to the short timescale, the department will need to use a statutory instrument rather than use primary legislation.
